Innovative Adopt-a-Barra Scheme Back in 2023

Port Lincoln High School’s Adopt-a-Barra scheme is back in 2023. For previous adoptive parents of one of our barramundi, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support and hope that you will again participate in our innovative program this year. As we get into start Term 2, our baby barra are growing well. Back in February, we received the fingerlings at around 30mm in length (and one gram in weight); they are currently averaging around 200mm (and 50 grams).

We are looking for more people to Adopt-a-Barra (for only $20 each; if you can help us out, that would be “fin-tastic”! Your $20 “adoption fee” will help us to run our 2023 Aquaculture program. Our goal is to have 150 fish adopted and we are just starting our adoption process now.

Every adopted fish will be placed into a designated Adopt-a-Barra tank. To keep your son* alive and well, we have been feeding the fish twice a day, and are constantly grading them into sizes to prevent cannibalism and reduce stress.

* All baby barramundi are born male!

We would like to thank all those who have assisted with our Aquaculture program. Last term, the class visited the Western Abalone and Southern Ocean Rock Lobster factories; these experiences open our students’ eyes to what is happening in our community. This term, our students will be involved in observing a tuna harvest and visiting Yumbah Aquaculture’s abalone farm.

At the conclusion of the school year, the barra will be harvested and will become available to their adoptive parents (either as a whole fish, fresh fillets or smoked fillets). Alternatively, fish can be donated back to the school for breeding purposes. Check our website for further updates.
