Aquaculture/Maritime Crew Contribute to Reef Rebuild
Our Year 11 Aquaculture/Maritime crew recently spent time in the field demonstrating our school value of Responsibility by contributing to a special marine environment project. We collaborated with Cuttys Boat Tours and eyrelab – two local firms with a focus on education, restoration and ecology – who are currently rebuilding reefs around the Lower Eyre Peninsula to encourage marine life to prosper. In particular, they provide habitat for our native oyster which in turn will help prevent the expansion of toxic algae.
Thanks to Matt Waller from Cuttys, our students participated in extending the reef system using discarded shells from local oyster farms. Our crew made over 200 bags and dropped them into Coffin Bay near Goat Island.
With Matt instructing, the students were also provided with an opportunity to practice their skills in driving a commercial boat.
This was a highly engaging and deeply meaningful experience for our class; on behalf of Port Lincoln High School, we wish to extend our sincere thanks to Matt for generously accommodating the students.
~ Mr. Chris McGown (Aquaculture/Maritime Teacher)
PS: The four students depicted standing in front of our school boat are each wearing one of ten new life jackets which were generously donated by Shaun Miller at Port Lincoln Boat Supplies; many thanks, Shaun.
