Final Adopt-a-Barra Update for 2024

Dear Adopt-a-Barra Parents,
We hope this email finds you well! As we near the end of our Aquaculture course, we are thrilled to provide you with the final update for the Adopt-a-Barra program.
This year, there were over 100 adoptive parents, which was a great success – this money went towards a new pump and a new blower system, which increased the dissolved oxygen levels to improve the habitat of the fish.
Over the past few weeks, the class has been actively involved in harvesting, processing and packing the barramundi. This hands-on experience has included collecting, weighing, filleting and even smoking the fish. Through this process, the class have gained valuable skills in knife safety, knife sharpening and food handling, which will serve us well in future endeavours.
Additionally, we are excited to share the details of some prizes that were awarded during this period:
- BIGGEST FISH: “Fish 3” (a 770g monster!) owned by Lana Harvey; congratulations, Lana – you win a $100 Seamaster voucher
- FIRST FISH CAUGHT: “Bernard” (550g) owned by Fabiola Herbert; congratulations, Fabiola – you win a high-quality Seamaster filleting knife
For everyone who adopted a barramundi this year, your product (and prizes) will be available for pick-up from the school this coming Friday, November 22nd. Collection will take place at the Aquaculture Shed, located at the top of PLHS near Oxford Terrace, from 8am~3pm; please follow the signs.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Adopt-a-Barra program this year. Your support has been instrumental in providing our students with an incredible learning opportunity.
Best fishes,
From the PLHS Year 11 Aquaculture Team
