Tuna Harvest Excursion for Maritime & Aquaculture Classes
Last week, my Year 11 Maritime and Aquaculture students spent a day on the water on board the Fina K, a tuna harvest boat owned and operated by Sekol Farmed Tuna.
Leaving the marina at 6am, our students headed out to the other side of Boston Island where they were able to closely observe a working tuna boat and the structure of a tuna cage. During the day, we witnessed the busy production line involved in the harvest, including divers in the water catching the 20-30kg wild fish. We were also shown the Ikejime process for humanely harvesting the tuna, and the transfer of the fish onto a Japanese freezer boat for processing and storage at -80 degrees.
This valuable excursion is an element of the work experience component of our Maritime and Aquaculture courses. Many thanks to the team at Sekol Farmed Tuna – especially Farm Manager Con Karaberidis and Fina K Skipper Aidan Parthenis – for providing our students with this wonderful first-hand experience.
