Year 10 Crew Attend Active Citizenship Convention

“Democracy thrives when everybody’s voice is heard.”
On Monday August 18th, a crew of eight PLHS Year 10 students immersed themselves in the Active Citizenship Convention for SA regional schools at Adelaide Oval. This opportunity was designed to empower students with the knowledge that their voices not only deserve to be heard but have the capacity for meaningful change.
We shared the space with leaders from all walks of life including television presenter Tony Armstrong, 2025 Young South Australian of the Year Amber Brock-Fabel, and the Premier of South Australia, the Hon. Peter Malinauskas.
During the lunch break, learners were encouraged to widen their nets and step out of their comfort zones to start conversations with leaders in fields such as politics, sports, STEM and journalism.
“I found out that adults actually want to hear what we have to say, that our voice is actually important.” ~ Kallen
“I learnt that the Government needs our voices to be able to help everyone and make sure we have multiple solutions for different issues. I liked that it only takes something small to be able to make a difference.” ~ Isaac
“The impact that AI has had on the journalism we access is something I hadn’t really thought about.” ~ Annabel
“The whole experience was extremely impactful and memorable. I didn’t believe before that youth voice really matters within the government and that we are the ones they want to hear from most. This opportunity is one everyone should take; it has definitely inspired me to use my voice.” ~ Alexis
~ Ms. Abbey Degner & Mr. Tyson Collins (Accompanying Teachers)
