Year 8 Maths Classes Celebrate Pi Day
International Pi Day // Friday March 14th (3.1415926535897……..)
What better way to celebrate International Pi Day than by exploring circles? On Friday, the students in my two Year 8 Maths classes (8B & 8D) students measured the circumference and diameter of different sized circles using saucepans, water bottles and paper towel rolls. The students recorded their findings and were able to then explore the relationship between circumference and diameter.
Through our findings and class discussions, we were able to conclude that pi is a mathematical constant and that it is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. We then celebrated our findings by eating apple pie… this is where I could insert a humble pi(e) joke, but I will just stick to teaching maths!
