Cuttlefest x PLHS: A Deep Dive into STEM Education
For the fourth consecutive year, Port Lincoln High School proudly joined the EMS Cuttlefish STEM School Program during Cuttlefest in Whyalla, where thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish gather to breed each winter.
Over three sessions, students explored cuttlefish behaviour, predators, and their unique marine environment, then snorkelled at Point Lowly, capturing data with GoPros and 360° cameras.
Earlier this week, Carl Charter from EMS (Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries) returned to lead a 360° video editing masterclass. Our students are now creating five-minute documentaries, with the winning film to be featured in a dome cinema at the 2026 Adelaide Fringe Festival!
This unit—co-developed by myself, Carl and Dr. Shelley Paull—exemplifies Learning Expeditions, a hands-on, real-world approach that boosts engagement and achievement. PLHS is proud to embed this XP Schools-inspired model into our future learning strategy.
